Let’s Eat: Talking Food With Iowa Foodie Girl, Holly Duenas

Last Updated: December 9, 2023By 3.6 min readCategories: Talking to the Boss

I started my foodie page just this past Spring! I had a couple of good friends tell me I should start a page for awhile because I had become “that friend” everyone asked for restaurant recommendations. They knew I loved trying new places and sharing with others! And I just freaking love food. And writing.

What has most surprised you about sharing your experience with others?

I have been surprised at how quickly my foodie page has grown and how many people have been excited to read my reviews and follow me. It’s been so fun!

When did your love for food begin?

I can’t remember a time when food didn’t make the world right…

Last meal? What would it be?

Legit Mexican food. A good chicken fajita chimichanga smothered in queso. Rice, refried beans, chips and salsa. I’m originally from South Texas where the Mexican food was authentic and seriously amazing.

Do you have a list of restaurants you want to eat at or do you let them come to you?

Both! I have a very detailed and categorized list of places I want to try plus notes on places I have tried. I have also had several restaurants reach out to me now which is so awesome.

What is something you love about social media? Dislike?

I am obsessed with funny memes and videos. I love to laugh. And I love to share/overshare memes with my husband and friends. Something I dislike is how much time I can waste on it some days. Oopsies.

Do you like to read? What are some standout titles for you?

Yes, I love reading. I wish I made time for it more. The most recent books I’ve read and loved have been Where The Crawdads Sing, The Nightingale, and the latest Hunger Games book, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Do you have a relationship to God?

Yes, I definitely do. My faith is a very integral part of my life. It shapes everything I do and who I am. I’m so thankful for the blessings He has given me in my life, most importantly, my family.

What is in your purse right now?

Keys, receipts, thread wallet, random change, candy, eos chapstick. Fridge? A whole lotta food. We have 5 kids (at home now, plus 2 more that are grown). Fave items in there right now are naan bread, spinach artichoke dip from Costco, chocolate milk, whipped cream, cottage cheese, feta cheese, and lots of other cheeses. We love cheese.

What’s an unexpected item in your pantry?

Two elves lol. It’s Christmas time and my kids have two elf on the shelfs that are hiding there.

Who do you like to follow on Instagram?

I love @desmoinesparent. It’s a great way to keep up on all the latest happenings in the area. I also love @jane and @jessimeeks for mom humor. They are hilarious. I also love Candace Cameron Bure. I really just admire everything about her, from motherhood, to her Christian faith, inspiring messages, and her happy and fun outlook on life. She is also so driven and successful.

What’s your favorite part about your life?

My favorite part of my life is my family. My wonderful husband Joey and I have been married for over 23 years now and we have 7 amazing children ranging from ages 22 down to 6. Life is busy and even sometimes crazy but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What are a few dreams you’d still like to accomplish?

I’ve been a stay at home mom for 22 years! I paused my education and any type of career to raise kiddos. My youngest just started kindergarten this past fall so now is finally time for me! I’ve enrolled in online school and am currently working towards the Bachelors degree I never was able to complete. I also have dreams of starting my own business and also growing my social media presence in the food scene.
